Common Waterborne Pet Parasites

While swimming is a great way for both humans and pets to get some exercise and have some fun, it's important to be aware of the waterborne illnesses that pets can contract.
#1: Giardiasis
Giardia is a pet parasite typically contracted by ingesting water contaminated by the feces of an infected animal. This parasite can also be passed from pets to people. Giardiasis typically leads to diarrhea that can have a strong odor or mucus.
#2: Cryptosporidiosis
Cryptosporidiosis is caused by a protozoan parasite most commonly contracted through ingestion of contaminated water or food. It can cause diarrhea, fever, lethargy, and weakness in pets.
#3: Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis (lepto) is caused by bacteria that thrive in warm, wet soil and water. Once in the body, the bacterium attacks the kidneys and potentially other organs. Signs can include excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, depression, and fever.
#4: Cyanobacteria toxicity
Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) found in lakes, streams, and ponds can produce toxins affecting pets who swim in or drink from contaminated water. A few mouthfuls of contaminated water may result in fatal poisoning.
