Choking Hazards for Pets – What to Look Out For
As pet owners, we must ensure our pets are always protected. One hazard that we often overlook is choking. Just like humans, pets are prone to choking on items that are too large or difficult to swallow. This can be fatal.
One of the biggest choking hazards for pets is food. Small breeds or older pets with weaker teeth may have difficulty eating kibble or hard biscuits. Rawhide chews and bones also break apart and can lodge in the throat or intestines. It is best to avoid feeding your pet table scraps or items not explicitly designed for their consumption.
Another common choking hazard for pets is toys. Small toys or items with easily detachable parts can easily be swallowed and cause choking or intestine blockages. Always supervise your pet when playing with toys, and dispose of anything that appears damaged or unsafe.
Keeping your home free of things that your pet could potentially ingest is also essential. This includes small items such as buttons, coins, or batteries. Keep these items out of reach of your pets at all times.
